Went to SM megamall today to buy the St. Charles Borommeo statue. It was by the way given to me by girlfriend. When i saw those kids in their costumes roaming around the mall trick or treating. Hay, I bet this kids has the faintest idea what's the costume wearing candy hopping all about. A few centuries ago this pagan holiday was Christianized by our church, now what is already Christian is being paganized by media and pop culture.
It's nice to know that the original Christ the King Feast is held every last Sunday of October. Ironically, during the first few decades of the reform, Halloween parties was a novelty in the Philippines. It's considered "foreign" and "pang mayaman lang". Before VC2 and a few years after VC2, Filipinos has the Pangangaluwa for Halloween. It's like "caroling" with a twist. Here's the lyrics of the song:
Kaluluwa’y dumaratal
Sa tapat ng Durungawan
Kampanilya’y tinatantay
Ginigising ang may buhay
Kung kami po’y limusan
Dali-dalian po lamang
Baka kami mapagsarhan
Ng pinto ng kalangitan
Kaluluwa kaming tambing
Sa purgatoryo nanggaling
As you would notice the song is cathecetical in nature. Reminding kids about the importance for prayers for the dead and the existence of purgatory. Basic things that young Pinoy Catholics cannot explain today.
Does the decline of the Pangangaluwa, Padasal and Pasiyam, the sudden popularity of Halloween and its occult significance and the moving of the Feast of Christ the King has any connections?
